I can’t believe its February already, the year is flying by! I’m looking forward to spring – my favourite time of year and always a good time for new ideas to blossom. I have spent the last 3 months working on a new book of beauty recipes that will be on sale in the UK and USA in Autumn 2011 so haven’t had much time to update the blog. I have seen some of the layout and the cover already and am very excited as its going to look beautiful as well as being packed full of practical information and recipes to get you making your own products at home. I have kept it simple but added recipes for lotions and showergels which are sadly lacking in most books currently on the market. If you want to be amongst the first to get your hands on a copy when it comes out make sure you join up to the mailing list. By joining the list you will also be able to download a lotion recipe that is in the book that you can use as a template to create your own face and body lotions from scratch. I have lots [...]

A very good friend of mine Miss Libby Rose has just set up a pop up shop for Christmas a 6a Greenwich market. Over a glass of wine the other evening we were chatting about how we could combine both sewing a beauty classes in this gorgeous little space. We came up with some great ideas for the new year but she persuaded me to squeeze a few dates in before Christmas to enable people to make their own Christmas Gifts. We came up with “Pink Fizz” to fit in with the theme of the shop and each evening will begin with a glass of bubbly to get you in the Chrismas spirit. We will make some Glitter Fizz Bath Salts, Chocolate or Sparkle Lip Balm, Organza Gift Bags and Fabulous Fabric Bows for your gifts Space is limited and will fill up quickly – you can book online here: http://selfsufficiencycourses.co.uk/courses/pink-fizz/ 29th November 6.30-9pm 9th December 6.30-9pm 20th December 6.30-9pm See you there!
I hopped on the Eurostar to Paris last week (as you do) for a spot of lunch and a potter round the shops. Unusually for Paris it was boiling hot and didn’t rain once (in October!) so I got to drink tea and soak up the ambiance of the Marais in the sunshine. I didn’t get to the Serge Lutens Boutique at the Palais Royale unfortunately, but after reading the article in the FT Weekend Magazine I headed over to the Frederic Malle Boutique to immerse myself in the fragrances of such great artists as Dominique Ropion and Michel Roudnitska. Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle I spent a glorious hour chatting to the sales assistant (although that title does not do her justice) about perfume in general, the fragrance industry and our days working for IFF – it turned out she was a fragrance evaluator in the Paris office a few years after I had left the company. In the end I settled for a bottle of Musc Ravageur an oriental with more than a slight nod to Shalimar and not a flower in sight. There is a bit of a strange initial note on my skin that I’m not [...]

Here is the recipe for a lip balm in a twist up tube that I promised a few people I would put up. We did this at a recent workshop at Bermondsey Fayre. Its really important to let the mixture cool slightly and put the tubes in a tray of cold water when you fill them, otherwise the mixture will leak out of the bottom before it has time to set! Spearmint Lip Balm Stick (10×4.5g tubes) 14g Beeswax 10g Cocoa Butter 30ml Almond Oil 20ml Jojoba Oil 10 drops spearmint essential oil or flavouring of choice Melt all ingredients in a double boiler. Place tubes in a tray of cold water. Fill ¾ , cool slightly then top up. Leave to set before putting lids on. Tubes can be found at The Soap Kitchen or Gracefruit

Its not often in the fragrance world that perfumers are allowed to take too many risks when creating a new fragrance but those bored rigid of the endless copycats must champ at the bit to work on projects for Thierry Mugler. I have loved his designs since I trained as a make up artists in the early 90′s at The London College Of Fashion. I used his motorbike bodice (the one in the George Micheal – Too Funky Video) as inspiration for my body painting assignment, where I recreated the whole thing on a naked model with body paint, mirror tiles and a can of gold hairspray. Wish I still had pics! Anyway I digress, my reason for mentioning Mugler is this find from The Perfumed Court which set my heart racing and reminded me how obsessed with perfume I am. Thierry Mugler-Perfume The Story of a Murderer Coffret Sampler Can’t believe I actually missed this when it came out in 2006 – (the coffret not the movie). Just goes to show how buried my head was in business at that time! Hmm that reminds me – Dexter Season 5 starts this sunday on Showtime
